Alcohol Program

During FY 2003, the Bureau, utilizing a combination of 402 and 410 monies, provided impaired driving enforcement funding support to the Iowa State Patrol and 63 local law enforcement agencies throughout the state, including 20 sheriff's offices and 43 local police departments.          Training opportunities for all Iowa law enforcement personnel, OWI prosecutors and judges in Iowa's 99 counties were provided through programs with the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy, the Prosecuting Attorney's Training Council (PATC) and the Court Administrators Office of the State Supreme Court. PATC also assisted with a number of workshops designed to educate law enforcement personnel about Iowa's newest impaired driving legislation.          Our youth alcohol education project is called "Get A Grip." It is a youth leadership and traffic safety program with a goal of developing leadership skills in high school age students. It is hosted by Iowa State University Department of Public Safety. In 2003, 96 youths and 19 adult sponsors received the training. The "Get A Grip" program also went on the road with five one-day leadership regional workshops through which an additional 310 youths and 41 adults received the training in 2003.

Public information initiatives sponsored by the Bureau include Public Service Announcements (PSA's) and educational materials developed by The Integer Group. These materials are targeted at age 35 and under audience who are disproportionately represented in alcohol-related crashes.
