Concentrated enforcement of speed, occupant restraint, alcohol, and other traffic laws through a series of highly successful corridor enforcement events has contributed greatly to Iowa's decrease in traffic casualties and the increase in seat belt usage.
Iowa's Special Traffic Enforcement Program (sTEP) invites statewide participation by all law enforcement in Iowa in a cooperative week-long enforcement effort coordinated around a holiday and in conjunction with a national campaign. These events call for heightened traffic enforcement for all traffic violations with the main effort to raise awareness in safety belt use as the best means of protection in the case of a motor vehicle collision. These week-long events are set on a federal fiscal calendar year. For information on the upcoming events press the link to the left.
Corridor enforcement combines the efforts of Iowa's traffic safety partners including local police departments, sheriff's offices, the Iowa State Patrol, DOT Motor Vehicle Enforcement, and DNR Enforcement that volunteer manpower and other resources to the corridor events. These one-day events focus on a particular highway or corridor with identified traffic safety problems. Each event often involves the cooperation of more than 30 law enforcement agencies and include the entire length of the designated roads in Iowa. Neighboring states such as Nebraska, Illinois, Minnesota, Missouri, and Wisconsin frequently devote enforcement to these events whenever the targeted corridors extend into their states.
